Circadian Rhythms, F.lux, and DDC/CI

•February 9, 2013 • 3 Comments

The circadian clock. A precision oscillator that regulates our sleep/wake cycles, our body temperature, our blood pressure,  our hormone secretion, our metabolic pathways, and many other bodily processes(mirror). Hell, weakened or disrupted circadian rhythms have even been implicated in bipolar disorder!(mirror) It’s obviously, a very important mechanism. However, ’tis a mechanism that is disrupted most easily by modern life. The biggest offender is undoubtedly the ubiquitous, backlit screen. What can we do about it?

Sneak Peek: Hardware Hacking/Physics Ed. Part 2

While I’m busy writing up my next blog post on the subject, take a look at these photos; these are of the Time-Pulse Accessory’s PCB. There isn’t anything more to the device – it’s just a $102 PCB.

After weeks of slavery, and an all-nighter that was nearly two, I finally have one PC back up and running!

However, it seems that my beloved, loyal, servant of five years – the Asus N10j-a2 – has suffered damage beyond the point of practical repair.  A repair is certainly possible, but I’m still incredibly busy, and in need of a functional laptop for in-class note-taking. Maybe at some time in the future I will return to the project and resurrect it.  Until then, RIP N10.

Edit: (late Feb. 1: ) Holy crap I have a lot of email!

Edit: (wee hours of Feb 3:) Sorry if I haven’t gotten back to anybody who’s emailed me – I haven’t forgotten you! I’m still working on it!

I won’t be posting for a while – as of yesterday both of my computers are out of service.

Kinda embarrassing for someone who lists ‘Computer Engineering‘ as a possible major, isn’t it?

The PASCO Fan Accessory: Hardware Hacking for Physics Education – Part 1

$60??!?!?! and it isn’t programmable?!?
Time to fix that.

A little under a month ago, my physics teacher ran into a few limitations of the astronomically priced PASCO Classic Dynamics System & Fan accessory (above)  — the fan accessory is not programmable, neither is it intuitively adjustable in any way!

(Mar 9th: Updated!)

Advertising, rich media, and….trendy sexuality?!?!? (a stealthy Urban Dictionary prank?)

•January 6, 2013 • Leave a Comment

For a while now, Urban Dictionary has been randomly redirecting to the (NSFW) entry for EyeBlaster. No, not the former digital advertising company, now known as MediaMind – but instead the vulgar description for a sexual act. At first I thought this one of my friends pulling a prank,  however no new chrome extensions had been installed.
