Now, I’ve never written about this before, but Backblaze sure has. In an open-source spirit that I admire, they detail what allows them to sell cloud storage at such a low-cost.

Their video gives a quick overview of their latest innovations:

State of the Union: Cyberthreat

“In World War II, when the Nazis were bombing London, the British government communicated the threat to their people. It was obvious, as bombs were dropping. But the government made it clear that everyone had some responsibility in the national defense.

They instituted blackout rules, requiring lights to be doused at night, or black curtains to be hung over windows. The reasoning was very practical. If a Luftwaffe bomber could see a lit building, it could hit the building.”

Planar Systems, Google: Give me a dev kit that combines Google Glass/LookThru, a quantum of capital, and a bit of time —- I’ll give you the future.

Sidenote: a video embedded in the article reminds me of Pummelvision. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=v1uyQZNg2vE]

Planar Systems LookThru LCDs

(*I google away*)

While researching, I came across this video: [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1WGFMAKLT4] Yes, that’s right. It’s a fridge with a full color LCD — with transparency acting like another ‘color’. It even  appears that transparency can even be controlled for wavelength (i.e. block out red). It appears that Planar has already put quite a bit of thought into this — They have a whole series of concept videos:
